English III - 11th Grade English
Course Description
This course combines American literature, vocabulary, grammar, and
composition. We will
spend the year reading novels, short stories, plays, poems, and
essays while improving your comprehension, communication, and
analytical skills.
In essence, we will read selections by American authors,
discuss the work, and then write on a related topic.
There’s something else very important going on this semester,
too, and I know you’ve heard about it – the Graduation Project
research paper. While you will complete the project in English IV,
we will write the paper and complete many of the components in this
course.
Graduation Project Paper
All English III students must write a Graduation Project Paper in order to receive credit for the course. A Graduation Project packet will be given to you with the necessary instructions and forms. Lost documents can be found on this website by clicking on Graduation Project in the navigation window on the left. Please keep up with the necessary due dates.
Highlights
-
Reading
Selections will include works by authors that are from around the United States, so students are going to learn a lot about the rebels that often sought to break away from pre-set conventions. We'll read classics like The Crucible in addition to more modern works like The Great Gatsby. -
Writing
We will be writing essays, journal entries, and poems in addition to the Graduation Project paper. Do not be surprised when you hear about additional essays; this class isn't just about the GP paper. Our first major assignment will be a personal narrative, but we'll also write other essays that require MLA rules and parenthetical documentation. -
Speaking
There will be many opportunities for students to practice their public speaking skills in front of large and small groups. Since public speaking is such an important part of building confidence during presentations, it is good to practice as often as possible. This class will do mock "Senior Project" presentations to prepare for the Graduation Project presentations in English IV. -
Technology
We all realize that businesses rely on computers and various technology to function. Educators must prepare students for the future by teaching them the 21st century skills that they need to function in this technical society. My classes will use technology frequently, and I will model appropriate use of equipment and software in my classroom.

Syllabus
This is a past syllabus from a previous school. It does not reflect what or how I may teach the course in the future at Cleveland High School. I think all educators modify their practices, and I'm no exception. This is merely an indicator of what I did on a previous occasion at a school with different rules and requirements.

NC Standard Course of Study
North Carolina has a set curriculum for teachers to follow, and
our team at Cleveland High School will develop our lessons based on
those requirements. Due to some discussion on the state level, I am
not posting these standards at this time.
