February 2012 AP Language

	Note: Post on the blog twice before Feb. 15th.	1 Discuss Willie Lynch's "Making of a Slave." Take notes regarding Subject, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, and Speaker.	2 Today we'll compile the information you found on your literary hoax on a Wiki. We're using this site: HW: Read the assigned pages for chapter 2. Check the board in the classroom for specifics. Complete your vocabulary worksheet (front and back).	3 Vocabulary 1 Due Discuss the literary hoaxes on the Wiki and share ideas to help you prepare for your essay. Take notes on Ch. 2 - Annotating text and dialectical journals. Examples: HW: Analyze an essay. Use one of methods above.
6 Complete an activity in chapter 2. Peer edit essays. HW: Complete a close reading of a selection from ch. 2 by annotating the essay or completing a dialectical journal. Essay due tomorrow. Voc quiz on Friday.	7 Essay due! We'll discuss the article that you analyzed for homework and analyze another. HW: Answer all of the questions for the JFK speech. ALL of them.	8 We'll discuss the questions in the book for JFK's speech in ch. 2. We'll look at an AP prompt. Write an essay. Time yourself and aim for 40 minutes.	9 We'll go over the AP prompt and share essays. We'll look at sample essays and assess them.	10 Vocabulary Quiz on Unit 1 In-class timed essay. Bring paper, pens, and brains!
13 Vocabulary Unit 2 - Due Friday New Controversy - Education! We'll read sample essays in chapter 3 of your textbooks and break them down. Want to have your own copy of Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides, purchase one this week. You must bring a copy to class next Tuesday.	14 Pink Flamingo Day We'll complete a rhetorical analysis of the infamous "Pink Flamingo" prompt. You must wear pink to be allowed in the room.	15 Progress Reports - Early Dismissal We're in the library to finish your Wiki assignment and get Ghost Soldiers. Read the Prologue and chapters 1, 2 and 3 for Tuesday.	16 You must be done with your assignment (on the articles) today. We will share information and discuss your results.	17 Voc 2 Worksheet Due Documentary about education. Discussion. HWK: Bring your materials on Monday and be prepared to write your essay IN CLASS.
20 In-Class Essay on Education You may bring your notes and/or articles. You may not bring an outline or rough draft.	21 We'll quickly go over voc 2 worksheet. Ghost Soldiers Day - Quiz Bring Ghost Soldiers to class and we'll read together for 30 minutes and discuss the Prologue and chapters 1 -3. Don't look at the pictures! HW: Students will be assigned fallacies to act out in a skit on Thursday. Read chapters 4-7 for Wednesday.	22 We'll go over past Brain Gyms, esp. the Queen Eliz Brain Gym An introduction to Question 3 - The Argument Question We'll look at Q3 from 2010 and discuss options. HW: Brain gym on argument question. On this date in history: President Orders Macarthur Out of Philippines	23 Go over argument prompt. Students will act out fallacies and take notes.	24 Vocabulary Quiz - Unit 2 Quiz on Fallacies Bring your books. READ chapters 4-7 of Ghost Soldiers.
27 3rd Block - Registration Vocabulary Unit 3 quiz Friday A new argument question and a new discussion. HW: Read Ghost Soldiers and complete the vocabulary worksheet.	28 Terms of argument and a discussion about inductive/deductive reasoning. Read & discuss an argument. Look at an AP prompt. Given any thought to the SAT? It's time to register: SAT	29 Ghost Soldiers Day - Bring your book. Quiz on chapters 3-7. Read 8-end for Tuesday.
